Subject: Employee Dress Code

Purpose

To ensure all staff maintain a professional appearance, employees are expected to wear attire that is appropriate and acceptable while working at Schmitt Woodland Hills.

Procedure

Employee attire should reflect a professional, efficient, and well-organized work environment. Department Heads and Supervisory Staff are responsible for monitoring and enforcing this dress code. Maintaining appropriate workplace attire relies on sound judgment, professionalism, and adherence to standards that align with the values and expectations of Schmitt Woodland Hills. When in doubt about the suitability of a clothing item, it is likely not appropriate for the workplace.

All Administrative Staff, Social Services, Activity Staff, Development Staff, and

Department Managers

Appropriate Business Casual Attire

  • Tops: Collared shirts, blouses, polo shirts, dress shirts, and sweaters. Tank tops may be worn if over 2 inches thick (no spaghetti straps) or must be covered by cardigan, jacket, or professional overshirt.
  • Bottoms: Dress pants, , professional-looking capris or culottes, and skirts or dresses of appropriate length. Cargo pants are acceptable only if they are tailored and professional in appearance (no drawstrings or excessive pockets). Leggings can be worn only if the buttock is covered by a dress, long sweater, or top.
  • Footwear: Dress shoes, loafers, closed-toe flats, clean and professional boots, and appropriate dress sandals (excluding flip flops).
  • Accessories: Jewelry and makeup should be tasteful and not excessive. Name tags must be worn at all times.

Business casual attire should be clean, wrinkle-free, and free of holes, tears, or excessive wear. Clothing must allow for safe performance of job duties and convey professionalism in all interactions.

 

Nurses, Nurse Aides, Restorative Aides, and Resident Assistants

Appropriate Attire:

  • Clean and neat scrub uniforms in any color are acceptable. Scrubs must be free of frays, holes, stains, or excessive wear. Pants should not drag on the floor, and the waistline must remain covered when bending.
  • T-shirts without logos may be worn with scrubs.
  • Uniform-style capris are acceptable; however, standard scrub pants may not be rolled up to create capris.
  • Closed-toed athletic shoes or Crocs/clogs with a back strap are permitted. Footwear must be clean and in good condition.
  • Hair must be clean, neat, and, if long, pulled back from the face and secured at the nape of the neck or worn up.
  • Fingernails must be kept clean and trimmed.
  • Only minimal jewelry is allowed: a watch, wedding ring, and non-dangling stud earrings.
  • Name tags must be worn at all times.

 

Dietary

Appropriate Attire:

  • Clean and neat shirts, t-shirts (t-shirts must be free of writing or logos), sweaters, or blouses.
  • Clean and neat pants, dresses, and skirts of appropriate length.
  • Clean and professional scrub uniforms.
  • Professional-looking culottes, capris, or cargo pants are permitted. These must not have drawstrings at the bottom and should maintain a neat, work-appropriate appearance.
  • Closed-toed shoes are required at all times.
  • Jeans are permitted for Maintenance staff only and must be clean, free of holes or excessive wear.
  • Minimal jewelry such as a watch, rings, and stud earrings is permitted.
  • Name tags must be worn at all times.

 

Housekeeping, Laundry, and Maintenance Staff

Appropriate Attire:

  • Clean and neat shirts, t-shirts (t-shirts must be free of writing or logos), sweaters, or blouses.
  • Clean and neat pants, dresses, and skirts of appropriate length.
  • Clean and professional scrub uniforms.
  • Professional-looking culottes, capris, or cargo pants are permitted. These must not have drawstrings at the bottom and should maintain a neat, work-appropriate appearance.
  • Closed-toed shoes are required at all times.
  • Jeans are permitted for Maintenance staff only and must be clean, free of holes or excessive wear.
  • Minimal jewelry such as a watch, rings, and stud earrings is permitted.
  • Name tags must be worn at all times.

 

? Inappropriate Attire – All Staff

The following clothing and appearance choices are considered inappropriate for any staff member at Schmitt Woodland Hills, regardless of role or department:

  • Blue jeans (except when permitted for casual/special events or designated staff)
  • Shorts, Bermuda pants, or excessively casual capris/cargo pants
    • Shorts may be worn by maintenance staff doing outdoor work but must be changed into appropriate attire when returning inside
  • Hats
  • Tube tops, halter tops, off-the-shoulder tops
  • Tank tops with straps under 1 inch (unless worn under a jacket, sweater, or overshirt)
  • Beachwear or swimwear
  • Pajamas
  • Yoga pants, or workout attire (unless specifically approved for role)
  • Flip flops or unsafe footwear
  • Sweatshirts (unless approved for designated staff or casual/special days)
  • Any clothing with inappropriate logos, messages, or images (excluding approved Schmitt Woodland Hills logos)
  • Clothing with excessive wear, fraying, holes, or stains
  • Provocative attire, including midriff-baring tops
  • Excessive or unsafe jewelry and accessories

All attire must be clean, neat, professional in appearance, and appropriate to the work being performed. Supervisors may determine what is deemed inappropriate and require changes accordingly.

 

Casual Fridays & Special Designated Days

Fridays:

Staff may wear jeans, t-shirts, and sweatshirts on Friday. Jeans must be clean, free of holes, frays, or excessive wear. All other attire must continue to align with your department’s dress code standards, maintaining a professional and appropriate appearance.

Special Designated Days:

On designated occasions—such as Packer Day, Badger Day, or other themed events—staff may be permitted to wear jeans and tennis shoes, if appropriate. These events will be approved and announced in advance by the management team and apply company-wide.

  

Enforcement

As stated above, department managers and supervisors are responsible for monitoring and enforcing this policy.  The policy will be administered according to the following actions steps:

  1. If questionable attire is worn, the respective department supervisor/manager will hold a personal, private discussion with the employee to advise and counsel the employee regarding the inappropriateness of the attire.

 

  1. If an obvious policy violation occurs, the department supervisor/manager will hold a private discussion with the employee and ask the employee to go home and change his/her attire immediately.

 

  1. Repeated policy violations will result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

 

This policy has been approved by the Administrator on June 18, 2025 and will go into effect on July 7, 2025. 

This policy will be updated as necessary by HR or Administrator      

 

DEPARTMENT HEADS, SUPERVISORS (INCLUDING CHARGE NURSES) HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO DETERMINE IF SOMETHING ONE OF THEIR STAFF MEMBERS IS WEARING IS APROPRIATE OR NOT.  THIS GOES FOR CLOTHES, JEWERLY, AND OTHER ITEMS).  IF THE SUPERVISOR STATES SOMETHING IS NOT APROPRIATE THEN IT IS DEEMED NOT APROPRIATE AND THE STAFF MEMBER WILL ABIDE BY THAT DECISION AND MAKE CHANGES ACCORDINGLY.
